About this edition

A Briefer History of Time was written by Stephen Hawkingand Leonard Mlodinow, and published by Bantam Books in 2005. It is a shorter, more approachable reworking of Hawking's A Brief History of Time(1988). All of the words you read here are theirs.

This is a web edition, made because a book about the shape of the universe ought to be easy to read on the thing most people actually read on. It works offline, so it keeps working on a plane, on a train, or anywhere else the signal gives out. The text is not edited, abridged or paraphrased — a check runs on every build that compares each chapter word by word and refuses to publish if anything has changed.

The illustrations are a mix of the book's own figures and a set of interactive versions built for this edition, for the ideas that a still picture struggles with. Those are additions to the book, never replacements for its argument.

If you value this, buy it. Hawking and Mlodinow wrote it, and their publisher took the risk of printing it.
